6 Oct 2015 by Ashlea Watt

The Jetstar Little Athletics Australia 2015 National U15 Camp was held at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra from 27th September to 30th September 2015. This was the fourth Jetstar LAA National U15 Camp which has become a premier event on the Jetstar Little Athletics Calendar.

There were 136 athletes who attended the camp who represented each of the 7 state associations, all athletes had achieved the national qualification standard and fulfilled the selection criteria. The live-in camp provides athletes with the opportunity to improve their athletic skills; increase their knowledge in a range of areas and socialise with athletes from all over Australia.

There was also 14 team managers (2 from each state) who attended with the athletes, each team manager was given the opportunity to observe and assist the coaches and at the same time received guidance and knowledge to assist them in their coaching careers.

Jetstar LAA would like to thank Glynis Nunn Cearns from the ATFCA who assembled some of the best elite coaches from around Australia to coach the athletes at the camp, they include-

Peter Lawler (high jump)

Phil Newton (high jump)

Max Debnam (triple jump)

Kim Mulhall (Discus)

Richard Huggins (middle distance)

Ian Hatfield (middle distance)

Glynis Nunn Cearns (multi event)

John Minns (shot put)

Susie Fulop (long jump)

Melissa Breen (sprints)

Alex Beck (400m)

Penny Gillies (hurdles)

Kerry Smith (javelin)

Cheryl Webb (walks)

The above coaches worked with the athletes in their chosen events over the two days to improve their technique, provide the athletes with new training methods, increase their knowledge of their event and more.

Athletes were also involved in various workshops during the camp which included strength and conditioning by Peter Lawler, Stretching by Monique Allen, Self-Massage and Injury Prevention by Alex Beck, Recovery by the AIS Recovery Specialists, Leadership and Sports Psychology by Chris Nunn and Social Media by the Australian Federal Police.

Athletes were able to meet elite athletes Alex Beck, Melissa Breen and Kim Mulhall who talked about their journey through athletics including the highs and lows.

We would like to congratulate all athletes who attended the camp, we hope that you had a fantastic time learning new techniques and increasing your knowledge as well as meeting friends for life!

We are looking forward to the 2016 camp!
